Darvilla studied law as a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and qualified as a lawyer specializing in asset management / corporate securities law. This role allowed him to interact with clients around the world, which he enjoyed very much. Hours, initially serving global clients across different time zones, was to say the least.

In 2009, Dervilla was asked to move to London to acquire two asset management companies. The global financial crisis has taught him to be resilient and to maintain a positive attitude in the face of adversity. For the next ten years, Darvilla has worked in London, Dublin and San Francisco, for which he is truly grateful. The wonderful experience of living and working in different countries has helped Darvilla understand different markets, customer needs and cultures, which is helpful in its current role as Varkada has expanded both in the United States and internationally. In his current role at Varkada, it is great for him to enjoy a similar experience for Varkada employees using his internal mobility policy to relocate offices in London, Sydney, Tampa, Salt Lake City, Austin and Scottsdale.

During Darkville’s tenure at Blacker, the company grew significantly, both organic and inorganic, which he felt was well-prepared for his current role at Varkada, which is in a hyper-growth phase. He learned that change is the only constant, and to be truly successful, you have to accept it. Darvilla was fortunate to participate in the Women’s Leadership Forum and was the CFO of BlackRock as its sponsor. Blackrock’s CFO was instrumental in his transformation from the legal department to the financial technology business.

Initially, Dervilla questioned his ability to work in technology while in background law, and to this day, he is struggling to keep up with the basic employee technology stack. After nearly five years surrounded by incredible technicians and security professionals, Dervilla realizes that you don’t need a traditional technology background to positively influence a technology company.

Soon, he joined Varkada and COVID-19 forced people to work remotely. Unboarding from a distance in a new sector was not easy in unprecedented times. However, Darvilla was overwhelmed by the support and generosity shown by the leadership. He knew he had made the right decision when he received a thoughtful note from Philip and a gift from his then-boss (Varkadar CFO) with constant check-in.

Customers perceive pain points

Dervilla says that when Verkada entered the physical safety zone, it quickly realized that a big pain for customers was that they had different devices that did not communicate with each other. So since their companies have implemented more security products, it has become more difficult to manage them.

Verkada has begun to reduce this hassle by creating a software solution that provides access to security cameras, access control, environmental sensors, alarms and guest check-in systems for all its customers, from anywhere, on any device. Verkada calls this solution “command” and ensures that its users can not only monitor with ease but also take advantage of various products to gain more insight and reduce blind spots.

On a personal level, Darvilla knew that Verkada was the right place for him when several solution engineers and members of the product and executive team installed Verkada security products in his home, making him feel safe. In addition, Varkada also decorated his parents’ home in Ireland. She was onsite for the installation, and it was a great comfort to Darvilla and her parents that the Varkadar safety products were protecting them.
